It's common knowledge that Dragon Ball Z ended with the Kid Buu saga in
the 28th martial arts tournament, ten years after the villain's death,
where we saw Goku go to train with Uub.
For many fans, the anime should have ended shortly after Majin Buu's
death, before the tournament.
Dragon Ball Super was released in 2015 and brought us a story that begins
right after the events of the Kid Buu saga, more precisely after the
villain's death, totally ignoring the events of the 28th tournament. So
the question remains: is Dragon Ball Z's finale canonical or not? If
you're still in doubt about this subject, this post is for you.
One of the many questions many people still ask these days is where
Dragon Ball Super fits into the story of the series. Well, that's not
difficult to answer because, in the first episode of Dragon Ball Super, we
see the narrator explain what happened before. Dragon Ball Super is a
direct continuation of Dragon Ball Z, right after Majin Buu's death.
Many say that six months passed between one saga and another, but it's not true because the narrator himself said that after six months, some more time passed before the events in Dragon Ball Super.
I believe it was a short time, about a year, as Goten and Trunks basically haven't grown up.
Just a reminder, the release of Dragon Ball Super, thus continuing its predecessor, Dragon Ball Z, only reinforced the fact that Dragon Ball GT is not canon.
Specifically, his appearance didn't happen in the anime, but in the manga, in chapter 31. In the anime, he's only mentioned verbally by Goku and Dende.
Uub's appearance in Dragon Ball Super as a much smaller boy than when he appeared in Dragon Ball Z opened the door for the possibility of the 28th tournament to happen. This means that those ten years after Majin Buu's death will still occur on Dragon Ball Super.
Manga illustrator Toyotaro said in the past that the current work would not modify the ending of Dragon Ball Z, so Uub will likely appear again, as has already happened in the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga, where Uub was extremely vital when Grand Supreme Kai instructed him to send energy to Goku, giving him enough power to defeat the then villain, Moro.
Another strong indication that Uub will be important in the future is
that when Goku was recruiting warriors for the Tournament of Power, he
considered recruiting Uub, but soon saw that he was still very
young.
With these two Uub appearances, one being vital to the plot, it's pretty
clear that the creators of Dragon Ball have big plans for him.
Of course, the 28th tournament in Dragon Ball Super may undergo some
changes as Goku now has new transformations and abilities that he didn't
have at the end of Dragon Ball Z.
Dragon Ball Super is still within the ten years that passed at the end of
Dragon Ball Z, which means that a lot will still happen in the
story.
In short, yes, the end of Dragon Ball Z will still be told in Dragon Ball
Super, maybe not in the way we know it.
